To determine if our JPhD program is a feasible option for you and if your supervisors have ongoing international research collaborations, applicants are recommended to discuss plans with supervisors at both their home institution and the host institution. Follow these requirements to enrol at either the partner university or at University of Naples Federico II and to participate in our JPhD program:
- Students must be first enrolled in a traditional PhD program either at the home institution, such as the University of Naples Federico II for outgoing students or at a foreign university for incoming students. The JPhD arrangement should be established as early as possible, ideally within the first year of admission. Exceptionally, the doctoral committee may authorize the activation of a JPhD agreement for second-year PhD students. No other retroactive activation of JPhD agreements is allowed.
- Students are eligible to enrol at any internationally accredited university that supports a JPhD agreement.
- Acceptance from supervisors at both partner institutions is required (one tutor from the DII, one tutor from the foreign institution). Both supervisors must approve the partner university and agree to collaborate with the selected co-supervisor.
- A nominal agreement for each PhD candidate must be signed by the student and representatives of the involved universities. The agreement should be written in English or in Italian and one of the following languages: English, Spanish, French and German. It should be signed by the coordinators of the doctoral programs, the rectors of the two universities, the tutors, and the doctoral student. Once all the signatures are collected, the applicant will be admitted to the JPhD.
- The agreement must clearly state at which university the fees will be paid (typically the university of primary enrolment) and the periods of time spent on doctoral studies at each university. The candidate shall contact the partner university administration for questions about their tuition fees and the terms for maintaining awards funded by foreign institutions.
- The tutor at the University of Naples Federico II (for both incoming and outgoing students) must be a faculty member or university researcher actively serving from the moment the cotutelle agreement is signed until the completion of the PhD candidate's research.
- The PhD candidate will defend PhD thesis once, usually at the home institution. The examination committee members are drawn from both institutions and equally balanced.
- Once each institution's minimum requirements are satisfied, the candidate will submit their dissertation to both universities. Successful candidates will receive a PhD degree from both universities, with a reference to the respective partner university on the degree certificate.
